Observation Narrative
Plot is located on the southern edge of Black Pond, a permanent 2 ha water body in a large bedrock terrace bordering the Potomac River. It captures the shallower marginal zone that supports rooted, floating aquatic vegetation. Nuphar advena is the overwhelming dominant, with only scattered individuals of Justicia americana and Sparganium americanum also present. However, the submerged invasive aquatic Hydrilla verticillata, as well as a submerged alga (Chara sp.) are also common to abundant. Most non-tidal Nuphar-dominated wetlands represent modified or early successional vegetation of artifical ponds and canals. This appears to be a natural community, albeit one associated with a highly unusual landform.
